Player first. Trainer second.
James came up through 16 years of competitive football across junior development squads and senior amateur competition. The proximity to playing matters - the drills he runs are the ones he still uses himself, the conditioning blocks are calibrated against what he knows actually translates to a 90-minute match.
He joined Accelerate Performance Football to give Chris the bandwidth to take on more players without diluting the quality of any one session. The split lets each player get the attention and the structure that private coaching is supposed to deliver. Two coaches, one philosophy, the same standards.
James's bias is toward the fundamentals - first touch, weight of pass, body shape on the receive. He's also the coach players tend to gravitate toward for ball-mastery work and conditioning blocks where the rep count matters. Sessions stay tight, the feedback is direct, and nothing gets skipped because it's "the boring part."
Sessions run out of West Point Soccer Club at 2 Webster St, Point Cook. James trains players across all four APF programs - Junior Prep, Senior Refinement, Off-Season Conditioning, and Injury Return - and is the most common second-coach option when families book Small Unit sessions with multiple players.
Where James adds value.
Fundamentals, repeated
First touch, weight of pass, body shape, scanning before you receive. The basics get the most reps because the basics are what separate players at every level above grassroots.
Ball mastery blocks
Structured manipulation work - close control under pressure, both feet, change-of-direction, finishing in tight spaces. The kind of rep volume club training never has time for.
Conditioning that matters
Match-pace running, sprint repeats, agility work calibrated to your position. The conditioning block is built so what you do in training maps to what you'll need at minute 75 of a real game.
Direct, honest feedback
If a rep was good, James says so. If it wasn't, you'll hear that too. The feedback loop is the point of private coaching - generic encouragement isn't training, it's babysitting.
